Hi Ed KI6R,

Your reply inspired me to pull this project back out. I started off by confirming I was seeing the same results today as before. I walked back through the construction steps and to my great relief, I found I had installed T1 90 degrees off, sending electrons on a wild goose chase.

Correcting the T1 orientation stopped the high current draw, and The bias adjustment now works. With the probe connected to a radio, it was even performing antenna duties. I didn't kill the high dollar can of silicon. WOOHOO!

Tomorrow - weather permitting I will install it outside with a short whip as you suggest.
