Here are some of the problems associated with ground communications using ground propagated waves:

1. I know it takes some wattage when using and audio amplifier to communicate through the ground. One can also imagine that a proper impedance match is very important. Tube type transmitters (audio amps) are a little more forgiving. So experimentation would come in handy.
2. I don't think noise is that great of a problem but it certainly could be. That would likely depend on your neighbors.
3. Finding someone to participate with you (you don't want to just talk to worms) is going to be on the rare level. Most people don't just out of the blue want to build and sit around talking on an archaic form of communication. They like to talk on phones or post on Facebook. Think of it this way. If there were only two hams on this planet would they like to talk to each other all the time.
4. Ground conditions and geological factors have to be a big deal.
5. I am not an expert on propagation directions but I would assume the broadcast would most efficient perpendicular to the two post.
6. It would also be a good idea to use a balanced transmission method. Less noise. I love balanced transmission lines!
7. Considering how people think now days there would be little interest in it. They love their social media and football games but most don't care about technical ideas. It scares me that we have a generation of kids taking over and they no little about anything. I am not saying I am better. But I spent a lot of time learning. If you stop learning you need to go home.
8. It would be good if some people kept this art going. We may not have all of the tools someday to communicate in emergencies. War can end progress.
9. I did hook up my sound card a few years back to two earth prods. I could see some nice VLF on my panoramic display. I know it works. Since I have retired I may find time to delve into this fascinating way of communicating. I would not expect long distance contacts.
