Given the clues thus far, Alan, I'm inclined to think your supposition about it being a local source is probably correct. Given the wavelength involved, though, "local" is a very relative term, so even if the radiation is incidental and not intentional, the source could be a mere few yards away from your listening site or several miles. Its tendency to start around the same time each day (after accounting for the shift to daylight time) suggests that utilities could be involved. The possibilities include peak load control signaling over local distribution lines, to power line carrier systems reporting accumulated data over long haul transmission lines. PLCs have long been the bane of LowFER Band experimenters, and more recently were also a source of contention during ham band allocation proceedings. There are many kinds of PLC signals, from steady carriers, to on-off keying, to all kinds of digital modes, contributing to all kinds of "squirrely weird stuff" on LF at times (to borrow Bruce's apt phrase).
