Radio Magazine 1 March 2024 · MOROCCO: Medi1 171 khz Broadwaves: All steps have been completed the official bulletin of Morocco has published the decision of the head of government for the acquisition of 86.3% of the Medi 1 radio by the Société Nationale de Broadcasting and Television. This recent announcement of the acquisition by SNRT SA of Medi1 Radio repositiones in the news the construction site of the public audiovisual pole announced in 2006 and relaunched several times since then. Medi 1 Radio or more precisely its official name Radio Méditerranée Internationale was created in March 1978 during a visit to France by Haasan II. II decided to create a commercial Franco-Moroccan radio station and handed the control over to the French company SOFIRAD. Launched in 1980, it was 51% owned by Moroccan partners (25.5% of which by the Moroccan Bank of Foreign Commerce and 25.5% by the Omnium Nord-African group) and 49% by France, through the International Radio and Television Company (CIRT) of which the mother house is the SOFIRAD As for Radio Monte-Carlo, Medi 1 has made the choice to switch from medium to large waves to increase its audience. The station took advantage of its good financial health to invest and modernize its facilities to cover Algeria to Tunisia via big waves. Its transmitter is still in operation, it is located in Selouane 18 kilometers south of Nador and west of the Algerian border. A transmitter with a maximum power of 2000 kW is installed and will be used with a power of 1500 kW. The installation will then be upgraded with the installation of 4 400 kW S7HP Thomson blocks, developing a total power of 1600 kW, The antenna consists of three pylons measuring 380 meters that are among the tallest structures in Africa. The shooting axis allows to cover a large part of the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania as well as a part of Libya), without forgetting the shores of the Mediterranean (Spain, France and Italy). A chance for Medi 1: The frequency of 171 kHz was attributed by the Geneva plan (1975) to Morocco and the Netherlands, but the project of a long-wave transmitter for Radio DELTA 171 broadcasting to Great Britain from the Netherlands never came to fruition. Over the years, the FM network has developed as has satellite and Internet broadcasting. The desire to privatize the radio in France has led to the liquidation of SOFIRAD and the resale of the shares of radios and TV. The maintenance of the Nador transmitter represents a very important financial burden, but aid from the Moroccan Government has already been granted, in 2009, for 15 million euros (50% of the price of the antennae work). Stay to see what the SNRT will do! Broadcasting in broad waves allows it to cover its great neighbor Algeria. The influence of the grouping on the station's editorial line remains to be seen.Michel Fremy Page Facebook Radio Magazine
