I'll just address a couple points. I think the frequency inversion could be taken care of in the software used. I'm fairly certain HDSDR has that capability. I came to the same conclusion of the end of your post about just getting a good sdr. It was fun seeing what the rtl-sdr could do, but you use your better tools when doing the day-to-day rf work.
