No problem Ed on not being able to find the article. You can't keep track of everything of interest for years. Yep, the balanced center tapped xfmr is probably the "heart" of the noise cancelling system. I love vacuum fluorescent displays too. :-) On the noise, it probably can be cleaned up with bypass caps, shielding, rf chokes in the right places. Since it's vintage equipment though, you really don't want to go messing with it, so you just live with the noise. My only fluorescent display piece of equipment is a handheld vintage calculator from the mid '70's... made in Japan. It's the Unisonic 790R, if you care to look it up. Has a very nice looking green display and it's powered by 4 AA batteries.
